Article adopted from the Balagh newspaper (1997) in reference to 24th imprisonment anniversary of the great Afghan Muslim scholar Mawlana Faizani

The Balagh -- a Publication of Maktab-e Towheed-e Afghanistan

THE POWERFUL SPIRIT AND THE ROARING RIVER OF HIS MIND

by
Ahmad Jeelani

In Afghanistan, there were other scholars and personalities who were much superior, more spiritual and more revolutionary than what the journalists on various world medias reported to the world. In the dark period of the monarchy era dominated by by Doud Khan (1953-1973), most of the famous figures among the Afghan people had either become supporters of the government, or had remained indifferent to the events that were taking place in Afghanistan. Mawlana Faizani and few others were to be an exception.

It is difficult for anyone to fully describe Mawlana Faizani, because our capacity of knowledge and understanding falls short of the weight and substance of his powerful spirit and the roaring river of his mind. Mawlana Faizani, considered by many as the second Sayed Jamalludin went to prison seven times during the treacherous reign of Daoud Khan (1953-1973) and the republican regime. During his last imprisonment he received more than twenty thousand lashes, the tearing out of the hair from his head and beard, twenty days of hunger strike and was finally condemned to life imprisonment. He and his companions suffered great numbers of casualties and the worst of punishments. Even though the Republican reactionaries tried thousands of tricks, promises, and tortures to drive Mawlana Faizani astray and to make him abandon his intense efforts on behalf of the Afghan nation and Islam; this courageous man, this great struggler and scholar was ready to stay the course until the end.

Additionaly, Mawlana Faizani was one of the most active religious writers. He was in continuous contemplation. While writing, he rose to such spiritual heights that he seemed to be overflowing with ideas and inspirations. He wrote them down very rapidly, afterwards, he organized them quickly, and handed them down to his companions. Unfortunately, due to his imprisonment most of his books went unpublished. Had they been published, they would have been a source of great spiritual enlightenment for people.

Mawlana Faizani prepared, for the first time in the contemporary age of Afghanistan, the opportunity for women to participate in organized Islamic teachings in Islamic schools. He worked hard on improving women's dignity and chastity, against the ideologies of that time which were destroying the human and Islamic morals in our society.

Lastly, Mawlana Faizani was considered as the best interpreter of the Holy Quran. His knowledge emanated from the Holy Quran, the light of his mind and his Soul was connected with that of the Quran's purity. Even though he possessed a prevailing hand in the teachings of the Hadith, his skillful voice in the teaching of the Quran has remained a delightful memory in our hearts and ears.

A PRAYER ›› by Mawlana Faizani!
O' Bestower, Sovereign and Holy!

O' Great, Merciful and Generous God, That the hearts of people are between The two fingers of Your Being; Turn all these hearts (of us, companions, supporters, friends, all Muslims and all children of Man of our time) as far as You will, towards Yourself, for practicing Your commands, leaving the forbidden, and knowing Your Unique Being, for the sake of Your names piled up Hidden, Great, Exalted and Greatest of Great. We are defeated, give us victory For the sake of Your Honor and Glory; O' The Most Pure and Holy; Hurry for its acceptance, O' The Fulfiller of all Needs.

 Imprisonment Highlights
Mawlana Faizani - Click to Learn More..."Being arrested and imprisoned seven times, pounding 18 thousand sticks, receiving successively electronic shocks for 45 days, plucking his beard and martyring his teeth are the known examples of the tortures given to Mawlana Faizani by the cruel authority of the dark monarchy era (1953-1973).

Moreover, all the things he went through added more to his commitment. The expressions on his face seen on the photographs taken in front of the prison bars were clear indications that Mawlana Faizani was determined to continue, as he said: "The powerful of freedom looters can only imprison my body; but my soul, my brain, my pen as well as my conscious is free and independent. I will continue my campaign through my pen and brain." Hence interpretation of his higher thoughts and deep emotion resulted in 52 valuable books on different matters."
