In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

"Praise be to God Who hath guided us to this (felicity): never could we have found Guidance, had it not been for the Guidance of God." (7:43 Quran)

Ustad Mazhabi

Born Mutasim Billah Mazhabi in Kabul, Afghanistan on January 02, 1964, Ustad Mazhabi is the eldest son of Mawlana Faizani. Although only a young teenager when his father was imprisoned for the last time, Ustad Mazhabi never became hopeless of his situation. Instead, even under the constant threat of Soviet occupation and dictatorial regimes biased toward faith in general and his family in particular, Ustad Mazhabi continued his education in Kabul Afghanistan and by 1987 had completed degrees with honors in both Islamic studies and Economics. During this time, his studies also included science, literature, history, and philosophy. Though sorrow and deprivation are common phenomena amongst persecuted people, Ustad Mazhabi always rose above such sorrows and continually committed himself to living a positive and prosperous life, serving as beacon of hope for those who had none.

Quickly realizing that the people of Afghanistan and surrounding areas were in need of spiritual guidance, Ustad Mazhabi migrated to Peshawar, Pakistan intending to share his deep spiritual knowledge of Islamic sciences. Such sciences included Hadith, Tafsir, Fiqh, Tasawuff (dhikr & taffakkur), and the philosophy of Knowing Oneself - Knowing God. With the goal and responsibility of enlightening his people spiritually, Ustad Mazhabi founded the Mawlana Faizani library. He tirelessly encouraged people to educate themselves and explore the natural and technological wonders of the world. In addition to caring for the spiritual well-being of the society, during these years, Ustad Mazhabi repeatedly stressed the importance of research in all material and spiritual sciences including: biology, astronomy, botany, sociology, economics, geology, chemistry, physics, etc. He was prescient in understanding that after the Soviet war, a balanced, educated, caring, and serene approach would be needed to cure and rebuild a society which had suffered so much.

To further promote this goal, in 1993, Ustad Mazhabi founded two newspaper journals by the name of Balagh and Khawrah. He served as the head editor of these publications for four years and wrote many articles and editorials on how to restore peace, stability, harmony, tolerance, and prosperity to Afghanistan and her people. The "Balagh" newspaper is still in circulation today, and Ustad Mazhabi continues to serve on the advisory board.

An important feature of Peshawar during the years of refugee camps was the jostling and competing political agendas of various mujahideen groups and their financial backers. During this time, Mr. Mazhabi met with all top seven Afghan party leaders and most other national leaders, ministers, and scholars; he also met with United Nations envoys, US State Department officials and ambassadors, European Union diplomats, and other neighboring country leaders and scholars to promote a peaceful, political solution to the Afghan discord, destruction, and despair. In the face of these competing agendas and financial incentives, Mr. Mazhabi's message of peace, tolerance and the servicing of the people never wavered nor changed. Due to his wise and rational approach to problems and his core belief of working for the common good of all, in the eyes of prominent Afghan intellectuals, Mr. Mazhabi is considered the wisest of the nationalist activist figures of Afghanistan.

During these times of tribulation, Ustad Mazhabi also led efforts by the Maktab-e Towheed (founded by his father Mawlana Faizani) to establish social and economic services for refugees in Pakistan and within Afghanistan. Such projects included establishing public hospitals and schools, building roads and bridges, running food kitchens, sponsoring agricultural education and support, founding textile production plants, and supporting vocational training. The Maktab-e Towheed was also instrumental in the distribution of humanitarian aid to relieve human suffering, poverty, and hunger in the Peshawar refugee camps and in Afghanistan. However, such aid was never simply given as hand-outs; rather it was an integral part of a comprehensive program to empower and educate its recipients to encourage self-sufficiency and thus create lasting hopes and an empowered community. Such efforts brought true transformation at every level - physical, social, and spiritual.

In February 1997, Ustad Mazhabi established a political party, the ICPA (Islamic Council of the People of Afghanistan). The main mission of the party was to bring about a negotiated settlement to the Afghan crisis with the aim of bringing peace, equality, and justice for Afghanistan and her people. The council was comprised of a general assembly, a central council, an executive council, and a number of cultural and educational committees.

Ustad Mazhabi has traveled widely throughout Asia, the middle-east, Europe, and United States and embraces a principle that sees humanity and life as a whole. He bridges the past with a positive view of the future and has reinforced over and over again the following spiritual philosophy in his message of peace, hope and tolerance:

  • Religion must not be used as a form of dictatorship. To do so violates the free spirit of religion in which an individual strives for a private relationship with God in the hopes of personal salvation.

  • Individuals and societies should not give in to those without direction (materially and spiritually) and who do not advance the concepts of tolerance, wisdom, universal love for mankind and global peace.

  • Religious majorities everywhere must be tolerant towards religious minorities. Politicians and nationalists cannot misuse religion and the power it has over people to simply advance their political, ethnic, or nationalistic agendas.

  • Spiritual teachings should only be spread and taught through convincing arguments that address the audience's intellect and encourage people to ponder on the marvels of God's creation resulting in complete certainty of faith. Such faith is based upon immense love for the Creator and must result in the servicing of God's creatures for His happiness.

  • When coupled with the philosophy of Knowing Oneself - Knowing God, religion (i.e., spirituality) becomes the solution to all our individual and societal sufferings; it empowers individuals to change from the inside-out and thus creates astute, value-driven, cooperative and synergetic individuals who genuinely want outcomes to be a real win for all.

  • It's not sensible for one to talk about world peace, until he/she first becomes a peaceful person. Hence, the teachings of Knowing-Oneself - Knowing God, with their penetrating insight, are fully organized with the help of Great God and are accessible to those interested in finding true and everlasting peace in their hearts and by extension, to the entire world.

  • The issues facing humanity today are global in nature and transcend the barriers of race, color, language, geography, social, political, and religious ideology. Humanity as a whole has never before been challenged by the enormity and the complexity of issues that the modern era poses. Therefore, we must all work tirelessly to spread the knowledge and the philosophy of Knowing Oneself in hopes of bridging the gap between civilizations by focusing on our humanity and common spiritual needs.

  • With great urgency, faithful and enlightened people ought to unite and work with other true humanistic people and focus their energies in controlling the violent fire of the Ego and egotism which has spread (almost) all over the world, causing all social and individual discomforts. Mankind must wake up and stop it with the help of Almighty God, especially in these critical times, before humanity is forever plunged into annihilation. God Forbid!

  • The ultimate purpose of Islam is to bring people to God, in their very spirits. This nearness to God is the only true antidote for the ailing spirit of mankind, for an end to evil and destruction, and for an end to the futile contest between nations. If man can find unity in God, then at the very least they will be able to find unity with each other. There is no higher or more profound cure for Mankind then the Presence of God in his/her daily life.

Today Mr. Mazhabi continues his message of peace and harmony. He is steadfast in maintaining that the application of the methodological system "Knowing Oneself - Knowing God" is universal and the key to ushering our world into an age of wisdom, one that manifests the creative cooperation of civilizations for the common good of all. Seeing that the United States is a global leader and harbors a pluralistic society eager for spiritual enlightenment, Ustad Mazhabi has come to the USA. He is dedicated to serving others and bridging the gap that exists between our current state of confusion and a future filled with enjoyment and true peace; making the world a more beautiful place, and attaining even greater advancements.

Having traveled widely, Ustad Mazhabi has a balanced approach to his universal message and easily bridges East / West concerns and Western / Islamic relations. A remarkable lecturer, reformer, and spiritual healer, Ustad Mazhabi's message is universal; he lectures on the concepts of brotherhood, friendship, honesty, love, compassion, tolerance, mercy, and the prevention of the spreading of mischief (within oneself and on the earth).

Being a mastered religious teacher (an Alim), Ustad Mazhabi is a humble servant of God and thus a servant-leader to all. He is naturally energetic and active, and currently functions as the dean of the University of Insight into God, manifesting the wisdom of Knowing Oneself - Knowing God. Under his leadership, the University of Insight into God continues to grow and empower people for the express purpose of ensuring peace, guiding society, and helping others constantly strive towards higher outlooks on life. Ustad Mazhabi is committed to working with individuals and groups that share a passion for curing society's ills and revitalizing the true essence of our humanity.

Additional notes:

Ustad Mazhabi is born of from a long line of religious luminaries and saints in Afghanistan. He is the inheritor of his father's teachings and has mastered the techniques of deep contemplation (Taffakkur) and constant remembrance (dhikr) of God, both core practices of Islam. Additionally, he is a recognized authority within Afghanistan and Pakistan in regards to hadith, Tafseer, all aspects of the Shariah, and the Hanafi Fiqh. Indeed, his knowledge of applied use of the Qur'an is staggering.

Ustad Mazhabi maintains that monotheism is the foundation of Islam, and hence he believes there can be no room for divisions within Islam; no sects, whether between Sunni and Shia or based on race and tribe.

Through teachings taken directly from the Qur'an and hadith, and proven to work on individuals' and societal ills, Ustad Mazhabi is like his father: a leader who is able to bind the Muslim society back together by hastening it to acquire perfected faith and engaging it in the servicing of God's creatures for His Happiness.

It should again be stressed that although Ustad Mazhabi's teachings and methodologies are rooted within Islam, they apply to all peoples; regardless of their own religious heritage due to their self-evidency, explicitness, and universal nature.

STUDENTS SHARE EXPERIENCE

"I met Ustad Mazhabi at a conference on Middle-Eastern cultures, where he was representing the University and meeting with a visiting scholar. I had gone to learn more about the Muslims and their ways, and was instantly struck by the nobility of this man. It was in his face, it was in his dress, it was in the way he moved, and in the way he looked at me. I was drawn to his natural charisma. That very night I made a point of speaking with him, and before I knew it I was learning all I could from this exceptional human being; a deep well of knowledge!"

"Core values, clear vision, and a burning heart is the result of Ustad Mazhabi teachings."

— by Salman Burhaan, FR

"Ustad Mazhabi constantly encourages us to be honest, thoughtful, and just. He is firm in his message of justice; advising to prefer to be victims of injustice rather than be unjust ourselves. He lectures that honest, thoughtful, and just people never take advantage of the ignorance of another. In business, family relations, the treatment of friends, and raising children (in all the occurrences of our everyday lives), he stresses the need to constantly strive to give life to this belief. Ustad Mazhabi views honesty, thoughtfulness, and justice as one of the most powerful tools to bringing about good on earth."
